Information regarding District Trials and Sports Teams

Term 1 is always busy with sport at school and District level. As there is so much going on, we understand that there may be some confusion with information that students bring home. If you have any questions or require clarification around any sporting information, please do not hesitate to contact Mr O'Connor or Mr O'Rafferty.

Students in Years 5 and 6 may nominate themselves to trial for District teams, however this does not mean they are accepted to trial. Our school is bound by the District to send only students who are believed to have a considerable chance of qualifying for the District team, and is also restricted by the number of students we can send. As such, we will often hold a trial at school to ascertain which students we send on. Alternatively, information about previous representative experience may be required in order for students to qualify for a trial.

These trials are completely separate from school sporting teams. School knockout teams will be organised as each competition's draw is published.

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

In a far, far away land… the students of Lennox Head Public School celebrate book week in a magical way, the book parade. This yearly tradition allows students to choose their favourite book and dress up as a character, making a costume, and putting their crafting skills to the test. In the past there have been some pretty epic costumes! Including Thing 1 and Thing 2, Thelma the unicorn and so many more! All this hard work pays off as the students show off their creations at the parade. Each year there is a special guest who hosts our event and students are kept guessing who it might be. In the past we have been lucky enough to have Hermione and the marvellous Snow White herself! This year we had Princess Leia. All the students enjoy the day and the fun that comes with dressing up as their favourite book character.

Time flies when you are having fun! Celebrations have continued for the start of term three with kindergarten students celebrating their first 100 days of school. This time of celebration included a teddy bear’s picnic, rotation activities, dress ups by the kinder teachers and students, including wearing crowns, to show how much smarter they are after being at school for 100 days. Time is certainly flying by and it won’t be long before these students will be in year one.

Local high school girls from Ballina Coast High treated us to a traditional Aboriginal dance performance to start off our celebrations. It was very engaging with all students mesmerized by the dancers. Students also completed educational rotation activities throughout the day including bush tucker information and tree planting, traditional aboriginal games, dot painting and literacy through art work. It was a very informative, fun and enjoyable day.

Red, green, yellow and blue were the colours of the day at our athletics carnival. War cries rang out with great gusto and the occasional sprinkle of rain didn’t deter the sporting spirit on the day.

Team houses of Ainsworth, Gibbon, Ross and Henderson marched around Williams reserve while chanting their team war cries. Children then entered 100 metre age races and completed field events throughout the day while the younger students of our school were involved in tabloid activities. They competed enthusiastically in all events and it was great to see all children “having a go” at all activities. Good luck to the students who have moved on to the next level of competition in the district.

Stage 3 STEM Day 2018

Science, technology, engineering and mathematical problems were the activities of the day. Students travelled to Lismore for a practical STEM experience to allow students to have a better understanding of how things work and to encourage an interest in these fields. It was certainly a success.

Students worked in teams to create inventions for the future. Some ideas included robotic hands and how this could work and move. Another team was involved in building a tall structure that could withstand an earthquake. The design was later tested on an earthquake simulator. The students enjoyed testing their product. Electronics was just another focus area that students explored.

Well done to all students and we look forward to the future with their designs to make our life a little easier.

It's that time of year again when we have to say goodbye to our year six students. The students have completed transition days at their respective high schools that they will be attending, and are more than ready for their next adventure. They are a wonderful cohort of students who have received many achievements in their academic, cultural and sporting lives. The year six farewell will be held in the final week of term four. The students are attending various schools in the local area including the new super school of Ballina Coast High. We hope that they enjoy the next six years of high school and use those years for achieving great things for their future lives. We wish them well.

They have played through six rounds of competition to make it to the top 8 teams in the state. This means they are the Far North Coast Champions. One of their most recent games - round six – was against a tough Moree team. The team then travelled to Grafton to play Narranga Public School in round seven. The boys unfortunately didn't manage the win but it was reported the boys played exceptionally well and all displayed great sportsmanship. The final score was Lennox one hundred and fifty one runs to Narranga run score of one hundred and eight nine. Well done boys.

STOP THE PRESS! Newspapers in Education have come to an end for 2017. The team at Lennox Head Public School have worked hard and long for many of the articles you may have read this year. The articles written by the team have been published in; the Lennox Wave, The Advocate, the Northern Star and the on school's website. It's been a busy year at L.H.P.S and an even busier one for the N.I.E. team. Some of the articles we have reported on include the school concert that took place earlier this year, the approval of funding for a new school build which is already underway and the visit from the Education Minister. This program has taught the children involved many skills including writing to a deadline, editing and photography skills.

Kinder orientation for 2018 students was recently held over a three week period to prepare the children for "big school". The children had a chance to meet their new teachers, look at the classrooms, meet their buddies and do many fun activities with their friends. Year five students have been teamed with a new kinder student to ensure a smooth transition to school. They are very enthusiastic about this buddy role. We will have four kindergarten classes in 2018 and each kinder class will have less than twenty students. This is fantastic for the younger students.

This festival is an annual showcase of NSW Public School students in the form of a combined choir singing and performing eleven songs.

The choir has been practicing throughout the year, and has already performed eight times in front of audiences in preparation for this performance.
Once Upon A Time… On Wednesday 9th August, Lennox Head Public School hosted their famous book parade. Each year students dress up as their favourite book character, and parade around the COLA. Even the teachers enjoy dressing up! The book parade is a big celebration of book week which is also celebrated with book fair. We have had some very exclusive sightings of characters such as Where's Wally, Thelma the Unicorn and the Very cranky bear! The students are always exited to see who will be hosting this occasion. In previous years we've had characters such as Dorothy, Snow white and Hermione herself! This year we have had exclusive access to be able to release secret information on who hosted this year's book parade. This year Pocahontas hosted our book parade! It was quite a surprise for both students and teachers.……….but each character presenter does bear a striking resemblance to Mrs Blair!

They played one game but unfortunately lost two tries to Alstonville's four. The boys touch team consisted of Jack A., Tyrel K., Beau J., Brody R., Callum S., Riley B., Finn S. and Tom S.

The game was forty minutes in total consisting of two twenty minute halves. The first half saw Lennox leading two tries to one but in the second half Alstonville made a comeback while scoring three more tries. The boys had a great day but were disappointed that they got knocked out of the P.S.S.A. Touch Football competition. Well done Lennox Head!

The continuous bell rings and the last speaker exit's the stage. Our school debating teams have been very busy over the past two weeks with two gala days under their belts, one at Gulmarrad Public School and one at Empire Vale Public School. The students skills of rebuttal and public speaking have improved throughout the term. Lennox Head Public School entered two teams into the Premier's Debating Challenge state wide competition. There was a lot of interest from students in stage three for debating this year. There was enough numbers for three teams this year. Lennox Head Public School had one year six team and two year five teams.

Some of the performances from schools around the area included school bands, senior and junior choirs.

"It's a great concert. Lots of schools participate and you see a variety of young children performing," said Coen A. who has participated in the Coastal Kids program for many years.

It was held at the Ballina RSL Club Auditorium to allow for a large number of parents, friends and relatives to attend as it is a very popular performance.

LHPS Junior Choir performed Count on Me by Bruno Mars, You've Got a friend in Me and Best Day of my Life by American Authors. The senior choir performed The Wild Colonial Boy, Who Will Buy, Almost There and Loch Lomond. All parents were extremely proud of their child's performance.

NAIDOC Week is an event held in July that sees schools and citizens across Australia celebrate indigenous culture and heritage. NAIDOC Week started in 1974 and the committee decided that each year it would be celebrated on the first Sunday in July till the following Sunday.

At Lennox Head Public School all students participate in NAIDOC celebrations. In class, students have been tracing their hands and then painting them in a traditional way to place in our front garden. Younger children also played indigenous games organised by head teacher Rob Roberts who was ably supported by indigenous students from Ballina Coast High School. The students played a variety of activities in class groups. Students here at L.H.P.S. look forward to celebrating NAIDOC Week next year.

Snap, snap, snap! Photos were being taken thick and fast at the RSL on Monday the 23 of July. Lennox Head Public School was privileged to receive an invitation to attend a gathering with the NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Parliamentary Secretary for Renewable Energy Northern Rivers Ben Franklin. The Premier visited our local area to have an open discussion with the community on what they would like and not like for the Ballina and surrounding areas. An afternoon tea was provided and our school leaders Josh G. and Mikayla A., along with Mrs Langfield, had the opportunity to personally meet and have a photo opportunity with the Premier. It was a privilege to meet her.

Phew! That was hard work but what a result!! Last month, year three headed to Pat Morton lookout to rejuvenate the bushland. They planted native trees to ensure the best chance for them to adapt to the land. Each year the company Geolink organises the program. Geolink has been running this program since 2003, and have hosted the tree planting day to coincide with World Environment Day. The species that were selected for the rejuvenation and restoration project included Cheese Tree, Sweet and Hairy Pittosporum, Bleeding Heart Tree and many more. The year three students worked hard and had a great sense of achievement and were rewarded with a sausage sizzle and a delicious ice-cream. They had a fantastic day.

Splash, the year 6 students have started the compulsory swimming program. We are fortunate to have a heated swimming pool in close proximity to our school as well as experienced swimming instructors. Year's three to six all have an opportunity to participate throughout the year in the program but this term it's specifically year 6. Once at the Aquatic Centre the students get into the water and commence swimming drills and stroke correction to improve swimming conditioning, strength, confidence and water survival. One of our year six students said "it is a great learning experience." The year three and five students are looking forward to their turn, after hearing that it is so much fun.

Lights, camera, action! Please welcome to the stage….. Lennox Head Public School students. Recently our biennial concert was held which saw classes display their amazing talents. The theme of the concert was Come Fly with Me! This year each class chose a country and performed an item based on its unique cultural diversity.

The costumes glowed with colour and so did the children's faces. We even had a pilot and stewardess guide us through each of our Come Fly with Me shows. Lennox Head Public School's concert only happens every two years so it is a special occasion. Proud parents watched on as students had a wonderful time performing. We even had VIP's attend our matinee concert, including Mr Peter Campbell, The Director of NSW Public Schools Richmond Valley Region, Ms Lois Buckett, a sponsor of Lennox Head Public School awards and Mr Paul Bryant, a representative of our local LIONS club and also a former Assistant Principal of Lennox Head School.

Some of the countries that were focused on included France, Hawaii, Fiji, Egypt, China, Africa and more. Students had the chance to showcase their musical and theatrical skills in carefully choreographed performances. All students and teachers have worked tirelessly to fine tune their performances and this was evident at all shows.

Students had an entire dress rehearsal where music, lights and costumes were put to the test.

As well as classes, our very talented band was skilfully conducted by Miss Kate Somerville to open the show. It clearly presented what a talented school we have with so many confident musicians.

Other special performances included the Senior and Junior Choir. The Junior Choir sang Count on Me by Bruno Mars and the Senior Choir entertained us with an upbeat performance of Wild Colonial Boy and Million Miles Away. The concert was a great opportunity for the Senior Choir to perform in front of a live audience as they will be attending the Choral Festival at the Sydney Opera House later in the year.

The entire concert was certainly a show stopper.

Alarm clocks rang early at the homes of year four students for an early start to their Sunshine Coast excursion. Students had to be at school by six am in the morning. Students visited places in and around the Sunshine Coast area. Some of the highlights on this excursion were a visit to Australia Zoo, Underwater world, Osprey House, Science Museum, Queensland Police Museum, The Planetarium, Queensland Parliament House and many other wonderful places. On the last night of camp, students stayed at Underwater World in the aquarium tunnel surrounded by sharks and fish swimming above them. Students were involved in many other activities including learning about marine life and a bit of fun ten pin bowling. Students returned home weary but with lots of wonderful memories.

It’s hammer time!

It's hammer time! This year building works will commence at Lennox Head Public School. The NSW State Government budget was announced in June, and Lennox Head Public School was fortunate to receive funding for new buildings. Surveyors and engineers checked specifications in early May. All students were curious about the surveying that was going on in and around the school grounds.

Our school currently has eight permanent classrooms and the planned new build will include another eight classrooms to replace the demountable classrooms we have. Also included in the upgrade will be a new administration building, canteen and a multipurpose space. The basketball court will also be upgraded, reorientated and resurfaced. This is a massive project and quite a lot of landscaping will be added in the process of the build.

These buildings will include 21st century technology upgrades and a faster internet network. This is a great opportunity for Lennox Head as children going to this school will be introduced to even more technology opportunities and new skills with this upgrade.

News about the new buildings has just reached the students, and they are all quite excited about their school being transformed. Fun furnishings will come with the building upgrade like puzzle chairs and tables which will be a new addition to the school. The school will be completely upgraded!

The children will continue learning through this massive project. This build will ensure Lennox Head Public School will continue to grow with our expanding local area.

Legends of League Regional Final

Nine boys represented our school at the Regional Final for the Legends of League Rugby League 7s competition. The boys were all very excited for the day as last year's team advanced through to the State Finals for this competition.

With that in mind, the boys got stuck into their first game against local rivals Byron Bay. Lennox Head were fantastic in attack and defence, and finished with a late flurry to win 30-16. In their second game, the boys outclassed Kyogle and comfortably ran away with the win 28-6. Game 3 was to be the most difficult, having last year been beaten by Cudgen. The boys were ready to take their vengeance, and managed to inflict a last minute game winning try thanks to a great run by Beau. In game 4 Lennox Head were looking to seal their status as Regional Champions and put the sword to Kingscliff to ensure they stayed atop the table, racing away to a 30-10 lead.

Riley took home a prize after he bagged a brace of tries in under 2 minutes, as did Josh who was unanimously named player of the tournament by the referees. Lennox Head claimed the Regional title, which now means they advance to the State Finals in Sydney this August. Special mentions to Tyrel and Josh for leading the team around the park so well; to Riley and Finn who gave great service from the ruck; to Dembe, Beau, Brody, Callum and Cohen for working exceptionally as a team. Well done to all of the boys and bring on the State Finals!

War cries were heard all over Lennox Head as the athletics carnival commenced. Students dressed up in their house colours looking very vibrant and colourful. To kick off the day, each team house started their loud and fearful war cries to gain extra house points. Then the 100 metre sprints started and that's when the excitement came to the crowd. Race after race the sport houses kept on cheering their fellow teammates. On the day, the field event finals were held while other students were involved in tabloid activities on William Reserve. Some new records were achieved by Josh Y. (shot put), Isabella S. (shot put), Juniper H. (high jump) and Rhett W. (high jump).

After a few events, the barbeque was switched on and Sue T. and her wonderful volunteers started cooking sausages for lunch so students regained their energy and continued racing for house points. At the end of the day we finished off the carnival with junior and senior relays for each of the four colour houses.

On Monday afternoon 24th of July many people from our local community were invited to attend afternoon tea with the premier of NSW. Our school leaders Josh, Mikayla and Mrs Langfield attended from our school. They got to listen to the Premier do a quick speech then were lucky enough to meet her. They made sure we said thank you for the funds that will soon be available for our new school buildings. They had a lovely afternoon and the food was very tasty also.

Two NRL Skills coaches recently visited our school. Students in year's three to six were all involved in a thirty minute skills clinic. The coaches that came were experienced players or ex-players, and one of the coaches had been in this coaching role for over ten years.

"It was a lot of fun and I learned new skills," said Taylah L, a Year Six student who enjoyed the workshop. The skills covered were try-scoring, tackling, and teamwork. Some of the students who attended the clinic are now thinking about joining their local rugby league club, which is Red Devil Dolphins Byron Bay Lennox Head Junior Rugby League. It was a great day with over half the school participating and all of the students had a fantastic time!

Being able to see how the coding works visually with the use of models was a fantastic opportunity. Other grades will also be involved in this program throughout the year.

Ding! Ding! Ding! The bell rings to signal the end of the last speech of the day. What speeches I hear you saying? Well the answer to that is the Paul Bryant Public Speaking competition, an annual school competition for Lennox Head Public School students to demonstrate how they can wow an audience in a timed speech. Stage 1 students presented their speech in a one minute time frame, Stage 2 had two minutes, and Stage 3 had three minutes. The students then had thirty seconds to wrap up their speech and make concluding remarks.

A finalist last year said "I think the Paul Bryant Public Speaking Competition is a great confidence booster and provides students with a sense of what speeches are like in the real world, for job interviews and the like."

The event is named after previous Assistant Principal, Paul Bryant, who also happens to be a judge, to highlight the importance of public speaking with students. Winners will be announced in next month's edition of the Lennox Wave.

Coen A

Following up on last month's article, the winners of the Paul Bryant Public Speaking Competition winners were:

Stage 3: 1st: Alani A. and Rhett W

Stage 2: 1st Kahlila M., Runner up: Miah B.

Stage 1: 1st Hannah K., Runners-up, Cooper A. and Tait W.

Congratulations to all students.

Tumble, turn, flip, cart wheel! Years one, two and three attended gymnastics lessons for two weeks on a Wednesday at the Ballina Youth Club. They learnt many new skills. The students balance, co-ordination and flexibility were all improved over the two weeks. They travelled by bus to get there and got to work immediately. One of the year three students was quoted as saying that she learnt new skills, became more flexible and loved the coaches. The students had the opportunity to trial many new pieces of apparatus including: trampoline, floor exercise, beam and bar.

Bang! And they're off, another successful swimming carnival was held early in the school year. Students pulled out their swimmers and goggles to participate and have a fun day in the sun. More than 40 students went on to take part in the district carnival recently. The students arrived at the Ballina memorial pool and got straight into the races. The students cheered on all the participants in the swimming races from their colourful houses of Ainsworth (red), Henderson (blue), Gibbon (green) and Ross (yellow). The parents also got involved, timing the races. The teachers worked hard and made sure everyone didn't miss out on any of their races. Lennox Head Public School had a wonderful time at the swimming carnival and can't wait for next year's carnival.

The Junior Boys Rugby team demonstrated team work and skill to win the 2017 Casuarina Cup. The boys displayed great sportsmanship throughout the day. They were required to play a number of games in their pool to eventually win the semi-final and make their way to the grand final. It was a well-played game with many boys in years three and four displaying outstanding skill. Mr O'Rafferty and parent Jason McCombie who coached the boys were very proud of their efforts and also for displaying great sportsmanship. The year five and six team also played well throughout the day to make it to the grand final. They were the runners up for the day in their age group. Thank you to all the parents who cheered on the boys and helped out at the event.
